Things that annoy me
I see a post going around saying that fans of the TV show “Hannibal” can’t be fans if they haven’t seen the movies. (And something about them being preteens? Does their age matter?)
You know what? Yes they fucking can.
Yes, seeing the movies will make them appreciate the characters more, but that does NOT mean they won’t enjoy the TV show without it. “Hannibal” the TV show IS ITS OWN THING. It is not “Silence of the Lambs” or the movie “Hannibal.” It is a TV SHOW BASED OFF OF THE CHARACTER. It is made for people to understand even if they haven’t seen the movies.
YOU CAN ENJOY AND BE A FAN OF THE TV SHOW WITHOUT SEEING THE MOVIES. (I, however, highly recommend seeing the movies eventually since they are fantastic.)
This goes for every fandom. Just because someone has not seen as many episodes as you, or didn’t see the “original”, doesn’t make them less of a fan. You should understand the person’s obsession and be happy with them! Dear god! Does it really matter if they haven’t seen the movies?
I am a gigantic Doctor Who fan. I haven’t seen all of the classic episodes. I want to, but I haven’t yet. Does that make me less of a fan? No. It just means I haven’t seen some episodes.
Just because someone is not as educated as you are in the fandom’s history does not make you a bigger fan or better than them. If we went by these rules: there is ALWAYS a bigger fan than you, so deflate your oversized head! Stop arguing over who was here first! Who cares if you read the books before it was cool?
Just embrace all new members to your fandom. Maybe they’ll watch the originals, read the books, or whatever eventually.
When you join a fandom, you join it because you enjoy it, not to compete for who is the better fan.
